What the report says

Kenyan President William Ruto has conveyed condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan after the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, according to Capital FM’s report distributed by AllAfrica. The message was shared from Nairobi and framed by Ruto as a gesture from the Government and people of Kenya, as well as from his own family and First Lady Rachel Ruto.

The report says Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who was Tanzania’s First Gentleman, died on Monday morning while receiving treatment for a heart condition in Zanzibar. Tanzania’s Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death and said it occurred at about 8am. The article notes that funeral or burial arrangements had not yet been detailed at the time of publication.

Capital FM also provided background on Ameir’s role in public life. He had largely stayed out of the political spotlight despite Samia Suluhu Hassan’s rise to the presidency. The couple married in 1978 and had four children. Their daughter Wanu Hafidh Ameir has served in political offices in Zanzibar and Tanzania. Samia became Tanzania’s president in March 2021 after the death of John Magufuli, making her the country’s first woman president. The death is significant both personally for the Tanzanian leader and symbolically for a country where her presidency has been closely watched across East Africa.
