Kenya records third Ebola case, linked to first patient who died

What the report says
Kenya has confirmed a third case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola, in Nairobi, according to the country’s Health Ministry and reporting by Al Jazeera based on AFP and Reuters. The patient is a 65-year-old woman who authorities said was a close relative and primary contact of the first two cases. She had been in quarantine since October 6 and later tested positive after developing symptoms, including fever, sore throat and malaise.
Officials said she was isolated promptly and is receiving supportive care. The ministry also said the risk to the public remains low and that there are no signs of community transmission. Out of 130 identified contacts, 127 had been traced and placed in quarantine, showing that health workers are still focused on contact tracing and containment.
This latest case comes about 10 days after Kenya reported its first Ebola infection and death in Nairobi. That earlier patient had been ill in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before traveling into Kenya. The cases are linked to the broader Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, where the Bundibugyo strain has caused severe illness and has no licensed vaccine yet, although research is under way. Al Jazeera also reported that African public health officials and Congolese authorities are questioning how Ebola response funding is being tracked in the DRC, amid calls for greater transparency.
