What the report says

Kenya will mark the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death with three days of commemorative events from October 13 to 15, according to a report distributed by AllAfrica from Capital FM. The programme is set to take place in Kisumu, Kang'o ka Jaramogi and Bondo, bringing together family members, community leaders and members of the public to reflect on Odinga’s life and political legacy.

The Raila Odinga Memorial Committee, through chairperson Adams Oloo, said the activities are intended to be more than a mourning period. Planned events include an intergenerational dialogue in Kisumu involving elders, young people, women and religious leaders, as well as a blood donation exercise. Organizers said the discussions are meant to focus on social, political and economic issues while also encouraging peace, dialogue and public participation in the post-Raila period.

A candle-lighting ceremony is scheduled for the evening of October 14 at Kang'o ka Jaramogi, led by Mama Ida Odinga. The committee has asked supporters in Kenya and abroad to take part symbolically by lighting candles in homes, churches, mosques and diaspora gatherings.

The commemorations will end on October 15 at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo with a main ceremony expected to draw family, leaders and the public. In broad context, Odinga was one of Kenya’s most prominent opposition figures and a major force in national politics for decades, which helps explain the scale of the memorial events.
