Kenya: Oparanya Convenes Western Leaders in Kisumu, Rallies Support for Ruto's Re-Election

Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya has brought together more than 22 elected and nominated leaders from Western Kenya in Kisumu to discuss a shared political and development agenda ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election, according to Capital FM via AllAfrica. The meeting focused on regional priorities as well as matters linked to Oparanya’s ministry, including coffee and savings and credit cooperative societies (SACCOs).

Oparanya said the first session covered the region’s political outlook and development needs, and that the leaders planned a second session before issuing a joint resolution. He said the talks were intended to help the western region speak with one voice on issues affecting the community, particularly in the cooperative sector.

The gathering also served as a platform for support for President William Ruto’s re-election. Oparanya said the leaders present were backing Ruto for a second term and were not, for now, concentrating on individual parliamentary contests. He added that lawmakers would still need to defend their own seats separately.

The group also discussed widening the effort by involving county governments and holding regular meetings as the election approaches. More broadly, the event reflects how regional political alliances and development concerns are being linked in early positioning for the next national vote.
