A Western Kenya leaders’ caucus convened by Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya has publicly tied its support for President William Ruto’s re-election to a demand that the region be considered for the deputy president slot in the next administration. The meeting, held in Kisumu and described as bringing together elected and nominated leaders from the region, issued an 11-point declaration through caucus spokesperson and Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala.

According to Capital FM’s report carried by AllAfrica, the group said its members would campaign as one bloc for Ruto’s second term while also pressing for Western Kenya to secure the country’s second-highest office after the 2027 election. The demand places the caucus at odds with the camp around Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who has said his focus is on a possible 2032 presidential bid rather than the deputy president contest.

Sirisia MP John Waluke, who chaired the caucus, framed the move as part of a longer-term regional strategy and said the leaders were preparing for the period after 2032. The group also discussed building a shared political and development agenda for the region’s five counties and said it wants to mobilize voters and local officials more broadly.

The episode highlights continued bargaining within Kenya’s western political blocs over how support for Ruto may translate into influence in future coalition arrangements. That broader context matters as UDA and ODM continue talks on a post-2027 political framework.
