Kenya: Nyaribo Launches Sh36.4mn Farmer Grants, Fmd Vaccination Targeting 113,800 Cattle

Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has launched a county vaccination campaign against Foot and Mouth Disease targeting more than 113,800 cattle, in a move aimed at protecting livestock and supporting food security in Nyamira county, Kenya. The programme was announced in Riokenye, Borabu Constituency, according to Capital FM’s report carried by AllAfrica.

The vaccination drive will run for two months and will use an e-voucher system under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project. The county government is subsidising the shots so that farmers will pay Sh50 per cow, while the county covers Sh110 per animal. Veterinary officers are expected to visit farms to carry out the vaccinations, and Nyaribo urged livestock owners to register their cattle and encourage wider participation to improve coverage and limit disease spread.

Alongside the animal health campaign, the county also issued Sh36.4 million in grants to farmer organisations. The report says Sh32.6 million is set aside for inclusion grants and Sh3.8 million will support 40 Farmer-Led Demonstration Farms focused on dairy and coffee value chains. Nyaribo said the combined support is intended to boost agricultural productivity, raise incomes and strengthen resilience in the county’s farming sector. More broadly, the announcement reflects how county governments in Kenya are using disease control and targeted farm support to help protect key rural livelihoods.
