Kenya: No DCP Endorsement for Sifuna Yet, Gachagua Insists

What the report says
Former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pushed back against claims that his Democracy for the Citizens Party, or DCP, has formally backed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the opposition’s presidential ticket in the 2027 General Election. In remarks reported by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, Gachagua said comments made by DCP deputy party leader Cleophas Malala reflected his personal view rather than the party’s official position.
Gachagua said only the party leader or secretary-general can speak for DCP on such a decision. He also said Malala had been lobbying him to support Sifuna and that discussions about possible opposition candidates remain ongoing. According to the report, Gachagua described the senator as someone who has drawn interest in parts of western Kenya, where some leaders reportedly see him as a possible flag bearer.
The exchange highlights the unsettled state of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 vote, with parties still working to agree on a common platform and a single candidate. The report suggests that regional backing, internal party interests and negotiations among opposition figures, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, are all part of the wider contest over who may lead the bloc into the next election.
