Kenya: Nairobi Identifies 16 Flood Hotspots As County Steps Up El Niño Preparations

Nairobi, Kenya, has stepped up preparations ahead of expected El Niño rains, with Governor Johnson Sakaja saying the county has mobilised multi-agency teams to reduce flooding and other weather-related emergencies. According to Capital FM’s report carried by AllAfrica, county officials held a second coordination meeting, where five sub-committees shared progress updates and agreed on a joint response involving county departments and other agencies.

The county says it has identified 16 flood hotspots that need urgent attention. Drainage work is already under way in several parts of the city, including Mombasa Road, Chiromo, Kangundo Road and Thika Road, where teams are clearing and deepening storm-water channels. The county is also training emergency and disaster-response teams together so they can coordinate more quickly during incidents linked to heavy rainfall.

As part of the preparedness plan, Nairobi has set up emergency hotlines 1199 and 1508 for residents seeking help, and is establishing an emergency response centre to receive and coordinate distress calls. Sakaja said the measures are intended to help the capital manage heavier rainfall, limit flooding and protect residents. The report also urged the public to stay alert and report emergencies promptly. El Niño is a climate pattern that can bring wetter-than-normal conditions in parts of East Africa, increasing flood risk in urban areas with drainage challenges.
