Kenya: Motorists Face 12-Day Diversion At Westlands Expressway Exit

Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway in Kenya have been alerted to a temporary diversion at the Westlands exit while maintenance and construction work is carried out on the elevated overpass, according to Capital FM as distributed by AllAfrica. The operator, Moja Expressway Company, said the traffic changes began at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, and are expected to continue until 5 p.m. on September 20, affecting the section immediately after the Westlands Exit.

During the 12-day period, drivers leaving the expressway at Westlands must move off the elevated section and connect to the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way. The company has asked motorists to drive carefully, obey temporary signs and follow traffic marshals stationed along the route. It also apologized for the inconvenience and advised users to allow extra travel time, especially during peak hours.

The report said traffic has already become heavier on Waiyaki Way, with congestion reported near the ABC Place-Red Hill Road junction as vehicles adjust to the diversion. Moja Expressway clarified that toll collection on the expressway will continue normally. The Nairobi Expressway is a key route across Nairobi, linking Mlolongo, the city center and Westlands, and is intended to reduce travel time along the Mombasa Road-Uhuru Highway-Waiyaki Way corridor.
