What the report says

A record 1,000 runners took part in the Standard Chartered Mombasa Satellite Run on Sunday in Mombasa, Kenya, according to Capital FM, which AllAfrica distributed. The event came ahead of the 23rd Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, scheduled for October 25 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi.

Brian Kurgat won the men’s 21km race and Eusilah Jemeli won the women’s 21km race. Other winners included Martin Madinda and Sylvia Carson in the 5km races, and Duncan Komen and Gloria Bahati in the 10km races. Organizers said participation rose by 25% from 800 runners last year, with the three races starting and finishing at Mama Ngina Waterfront and passing landmarks across central Mombasa.

The report also noted special recognition for 84-year-old Lalit Doshi, who completed the 10km event, and for Amin Hussein, one of the fastest children in the run. David Mwindi, chairperson of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon Local Organising Committee, said the turnout reflected the event’s community appeal and its link to the Standard Chartered Foundation’s wider goals.

Capital FM reported that the Mombasa race is part of a buildup to the Nairobi Marathon, which organizers expect to draw 30,000 participants. The article also said the 2026 marathon has attracted record sponsorship and has historically supported programmes for young people, women and persons with disabilities through the foundation.
