What the report says

Microsoft is set to close part of its Africa Development Centre in Nairobi as it reshapes its engineering operations, according to a report from Capital FM carried by AllAfrica. The company is already notifying affected employees in Kenya about the proposed changes. Microsoft said it was speaking directly with staff about the restructuring and declined to discuss the details publicly, citing the sensitivity of the process.

The Nairobi centre opened in 2019 as a regional engineering hub focused on software development, design, research and innovation. It also included Microsoft Garage, an incubation space for technology projects. By 2022, the site had expanded to more than 450 full-time employees working across engineering, machine learning, data science, market research and infrastructure, showing the scale of the operation before the current review.

Microsoft said it remains committed to Kenya and expects to keep employees in the country while supporting digital transformation and innovation. The planned closure of part of the hub comes amid a broader period of restructuring by multinational firms in Kenya, where some global companies have trimmed operations in response to cost pressures and changing business conditions. The development matters because it affects a prominent tech employer and raises questions about the future shape of international engineering investment in Nairobi.
