Kenya: KNCHR Warns Kenya's Suicide Crisis May Be Worse Than Reported Due to Lack of National Registry

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has warned that the country’s suicide crisis may be undercounted because Kenya does not yet have a national suicide registry. In remarks carried by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, the commission said existing government estimates suggest about four deaths by suicide per day and hundreds of attempts each year, but the actual toll could be higher because of stigma and weak reporting systems. The statement was issued in Nairobi on World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on September 10.

KNCHR used the occasion to call for stronger prevention efforts, including better access to mental health and psychosocial support, more reliable data collection, and safer public discussion of suicide. It said suicide prevention should be treated as a rights issue as well as a health concern, linking the matter to constitutional protections for dignity, equality and health. The commission also welcomed legal and policy changes already underway, including a January 2025 High Court ruling that struck down the criminalisation of attempted suicide and a parliamentary push to repeal the related Penal Code provision.

The commission said progress has been uneven, citing limited staffing, underfunding and weak community-level services. It urged national and county authorities to establish suicide surveillance systems, strengthen primary care mental health services and protect privacy in reporting. KNCHR also called on media outlets to cover suicide carefully and avoid sensational detail, saying more open and compassionate conversations are needed to reduce stigma and improve help-seeking.
