Kenya: KNCHR Warns Enforced Disappearances Remain a 'Continuing' Human Rights Crisis in Kenya

Kenya’s National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has said enforced disappearances remain a continuing human rights crisis in the country, pointing to 46 cases it documented in 2026. The watchdog made the appeal in Nairobi as part of observances for the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, urging the government to determine the fate of missing people and ensure those responsible are prosecuted.

According to the Capital FM report distributed by AllAfrica, KNCHR said 35 of the cases were included in its National Reparations Framework and a report submitted to President William Ruto on June 15. It said a further 11 cases were documented during the June 25 protests, involving people who were arrested, held without contact and later found to have suffered torture and ill-treatment.

The commission called for an end to abductions, secret detention and other forms of unacknowledged deprivation of liberty. It also pressed the Ministry of Interior, police investigators and prosecutors to publish verified information, trace missing people, preserve evidence and pursue accountability regardless of rank or institutional affiliation. KNCHR said compensation for victims should not replace criminal responsibility.

The watchdog further urged Kenya to ratify the international convention on enforced disappearances and to comply with a court order covering the 35 victims identified in its reparations report. The issue matters because families of missing persons may spend long periods without knowing whether relatives are alive, detained, injured or dead, leaving unresolved concerns about rights, state accountability and the rule of law.
