Kenya: KMPDU Demands Urgent Protection for Health Workers After Kenya Confirms First Ebola Case

What the report says
Kenya’s doctors’ union has urged the government to move quickly to protect health workers after authorities confirmed the country’s first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease and reported the patient’s death in Nairobi. The report, carried by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, says the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) wants immediate identification and monitoring of staff who may have been exposed at Nairobi Hospital or other facilities, along with psychological support and follow-up care.
KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Bhimji Atellah said the response should treat frontline worker safety as a national priority. The union also called for transparent contact tracing, regular public updates, and stronger infection-prevention measures so misinformation does not spread while the outbreak is being managed. According to the article, Kenya’s health authorities have already activated contact tracing and outbreak-response steps after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale confirmed the patient had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda before arriving in Nairobi.
The patient, who had reportedly lived in the DRC for years, had sought treatment at several health facilities before being confirmed with the disease. KMPDU said that movement through multiple care points raises the need to assess exposure risks for healthcare workers and other contacts. It also pressed for operational isolation units, adequate protective equipment, trained staff, and better medical cover for health workers.
More broadly, the case adds to regional concern about cross-border Ebola transmission in East Africa, especially given travel links among the DRC, Uganda and Kenya. KMPDU said it would keep monitoring the situation and push for safeguards to be put in place.
