Kenya: Kisii Woman Rep Dorice Aburi Urges Parents to Give Teen Mothers a Second Chance in School

Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya Aburi has urged parents and guardians in Bonchari and surrounding areas to support teenage mothers who leave school, saying pregnancy should not permanently end a girl’s education. Speaking at a women’s meeting in Bonchari, Kisii County, she appealed for families to help affected girls return to class and avoid stigma that can keep them out of school.

According to the report from Capital FM, Aburi said the rising number of teenage mothers dropping out of school was a concern and encouraged parents to treat the issue as one that can be addressed through support and guidance. She said girls who become mothers while still in school should still be given a chance to continue their studies, and she pointed to examples of women who completed their education after giving birth as teenagers.

Aburi also called on families to report cases of defilement and pursue justice rather than silencing victims or settling matters outside the legal system. She warned that blaming abused children can deepen trauma and discourage them from seeking help. In addition, she backed President William Ruto’s position that foreign small-scale traders in Kenya should follow licensing and other legal requirements. The remarks come as Aburi positions herself in the Bonchari political contest while focusing on education, child protection and women’s issues.
