What the report says

Africa Check, in a report distributed by AllAfrica, says a front-page image circulating on social media and purporting to be from Kenya’s Standard newspaper is fake. The image, dated 6 October 2026, claimed to show a story about Machakos county governor Wavinya Ndeti and suggested she was facing a political collapse ahead of the 2027 election.

According to the fact-check, the fabricated cover alleged that Ndeti had failed to deliver development in Machakos and was considering not seeking another term. Africa Check said its review found clear visual differences from genuine Standard front pages, including the masthead and headline font, and noted an incorrect cover price as another warning sign.

The organisation also said it checked The Standard’s verified social media accounts and e-paper archive and found that the real 6 October front page carried a different headline and unrelated lead story. It further said the viral design appeared to have been altered from the newspaper’s 5 October edition. The report matters because it highlights how manipulated newspaper covers can be used to spread misleading political claims online, particularly around elected officials and upcoming elections.

Machakos lies east of Nairobi, and Ndeti won the governorship in Kenya’s 2022 general election. Africa Check’s conclusion was that the circulating front page did not come from The Standard.
