Kenya: Keep Off IEBC - Wetangula Tells Opposition Ahead of 2027 Polls

National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetangula has urged Kenya’s opposition to stay away from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and allow it to independently prepare for the 2027 general election, according to a Capital FM report distributed by AllAfrica. He also appealed for more restrained language toward the electoral body, saying it has shown it can manage credible polls.

Wetangula made the remarks during a church service and fundraiser at Olasiti AIC Church in Kekonyokie Ward, Narok East Constituency. He also used the platform to defend President William Ruto’s development agenda, pointing to government investments in agriculture and an airport project in Narok as evidence of progress.

The speaker argued that the administration should be given more time to complete its programmes and said Ruto should serve a second term. The event was hosted by Narok East MP Aramat, who separately warned officials involved in recruiting workers for the Standard Gauge Railway project to prioritize local residents.

The comments come as Kenya’s political debate begins to turn toward the next election cycle. In general, the IEBC plays a central role in election administration, so calls for it to operate without political pressure often carry wider significance for public confidence in the vote.
