Kenya: High Court Orders Police to Produce Missing Lawyer Abshir Abdi 'Dead or Alive'

What the report says
The Kenyan High Court has ordered police and other state agencies to produce missing Nairobi lawyer Abshir Ahmedsadak Abdi before the court, or account for his disappearance, in a case filed by his brother, Zakaria Abshir. According to Capital FM, the order was issued by Justice Alexander Muasya Muteti after the court accepted the application as urgent. The judge directed the respondents to bring Abdi to court on November 4, 2026, and to explain the circumstances of his reported abduction and any detention connected to the matter.
The Law Society of Kenya said Abdi was allegedly abducted on the morning of November 2 along Muchai Road off Ngong Road in Nairobi. The society said the lawyer, who practices with Abshir & Njagi Advocates, may have been targeted because of his role in a criminal case before the Makadara Law Courts, where he was reportedly both a complainant and a key witness. It also said the reported incident involved armed men and vehicles allegedly linked to police-style dress, raising concern about possible state involvement.
LSK has asked Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority to trace Abdi, investigate the disappearance and determine whether officers or other state agents were involved. The society said the case raises concerns about the safety of lawyers and the protection of legal independence in Kenya. More broadly, enforced disappearance allegations can trigger constitutional, criminal and human-rights scrutiny, especially when officials are accused of possible participation or of failing to protect a citizen.
