Kenya: High Court Blocks DCI From Arresting Governor Badilisha After Weeks of Attempts

What the report says
A Kenyan High Court has stopped the Director of Criminal Investigations and other security officers from arresting or detaining Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha while investigations continue. According to Capital FM’s report carried by AllAfrica, Justice C.W. Githua issued the orders at the Naivasha High Court on August 18, 2026, after Badilisha asked the court for protection from arrest.
The judge also granted the governor anticipatory bail and certified the application as urgent. The court directed the respondents, including the DCI and the National Police Service, to be served with the papers and given seven days to file their replies. The matter was set for mention on September 3, 2026, for further directions.
The court’s intervention followed weeks of reported attempts to arrest Badilisha. The article also noted that the legal dispute comes just days after he defected from the ruling United Democratic Alliance to the Democracy for Citizens Party, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Gachagua described the move as a boost for the new party and said Badilisha and other Nyandarua leaders intended to contest future elections on DCP tickets. The case matters because it combines an active corruption-related probe with a high-profile political realignment in central Kenya.
