Kenya: Govt Targets HIV, Teenage Pregnancies in Youth Health Push

Kenya’s government is intensifying efforts to address HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies and sexual and gender-based violence, issues officials say are undermining the health, education and long-term prospects of young people. The report, carried by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, says Principal Secretary for Medical Services Ouma Oluga described the problems as linked and argued for a coordinated response from health services, schools, families, communities and state agencies.

Oluga spoke on Wednesday at a mentorship and advocacy event at Mawego Technical Training Institute in Homa Bay County. The gathering was led by First Lady Rachel Ruto under the Voice of Children Initiative, which is run through the Office of the First Lady and the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development. The event also brought together county and national officials, health workers, community leaders and young people.

According to the report, the government sees the campaign as part of its Universal Health Coverage agenda, especially in counties with large youth populations. Oluga said preventive and community-based services are being expanded through Primary Health Care, with Community Health Promoters helping identify vulnerable adolescents and connect them to HIV testing, reproductive health care, maternal services and support for survivors of violence. He also pointed to the Social Health Authority as a way to reduce financial barriers for pregnant teenagers.

Homa Bay was highlighted as a county with an especially young population. The article says the initiative is meant to strengthen protection, keep children in school and give adolescents a stronger voice in decisions affecting their wellbeing.
