What the report says

AllAfrica, citing Capital FM, reports that Kenya’s national government is putting more than Sh922 million into 14 modern market projects in Kisumu County through the Economic Stimulus Programme. The works are being carried out by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and are intended to improve trading spaces for small-scale businesses, support local commerce and serve more than 4,000 traders once completed.

Several projects are at different stages. In Kisumu East, Mowlem Market is reported to be 12 percent complete, with a Sh58.8 million budget and space for 300 traders, while the planned Sh70 million Mamboleo Market has finished design work and is awaiting tendering. In Kisumu West, Kisian and Holo markets, each valued at Sh58.8 million and designed for 300 traders, are both reported at 98 percent completion. The planned Dago Market has stalled after the contractor’s deal was terminated and is set for re-advertisement.

In Muhoroni, the Sh58.8 million Muhoroni Market is 18 percent complete, and four additional markets — Masogo/Kibigori, Kopere, Koru and Miwani — each have Sh70 million allocations, with procurement expected after completed designs. Capital FM also reported planned works in Nyakach and Seme, including Nyakwere, Kaloka, Kombewa and Daraja Mbili markets, with some awaiting fresh procurement.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo linked the investments to support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The report frames the markets as part of a broader effort to improve working conditions, reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen Kisumu’s role as a regional trade hub.
