Kenya: Govt Deploys Automatic Terminal Information Service At JKIA to Improve Management of Arriving, Departing Flights

Kenya’s government is introducing new operational and security measures at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi to improve how arriving and departing flights are managed. According to Capital FM’s report distributed by AllAfrica, the changes include the rollout of the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) and progress on an Advanced Passenger Registration system, both meant to improve flight processing and strengthen oversight.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration said the systems are part of a broader effort to tighten control over passenger data, border procedures and baggage handling at the airport. The update came through the Border Control and Operations Coordination Committee, whose chair, Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, urged agencies to ensure committee decisions are carried through into practical action. Immigration Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang also called for closer coordination among airport and border-control agencies.

The measures form part of a wider JKIA optimisation programme linked to the government’s 154.2 billion modernisation plan. The plan is intended to raise annual passenger capacity from about 8 million to 12 million and reinforce JKIA’s role as a regional aviation hub. The airport currently handles about 8.8 million passengers and more than 358 kilotonnes of cargo a year, with transit traffic making up a large share of passenger flow.

The report also says Kenya Airports Authority is enforcing new baggage and cargo procedures to reduce irregular handling, including rules on separating passenger luggage from cargo and using approved channels for freight movement. A new terminal is under construction and is expected to add further capacity when completed.
