Kenya: Govt Activates National Response As El Niño Rains Approach Kenya

What the report says
Kenya’s government has activated a nationwide response plan ahead of expected El Niño rains, according to Capital FM’s report distributed by AllAfrica. The measures are being coordinated through the National Disaster Operations Centre under the National Contingency Plan, with agencies told to stand ready for flooding and other weather-related emergencies.
The response includes round-the-clock search and rescue support from the Kenya Coast Guard Service, Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Red Cross Society and National Youth Service. Authorities have also prepared evacuation and displacement centres, a system for registering displaced people, alternative transport routes where roads are cut off, and air support if needed.
Public health and relief steps are also part of the plan. The government says it has deployed emergency health coordination structures, stepped up surveillance for waterborne and vector-borne disease risks, and arranged water treatment supplies and sanitation checks. Food stocks and shelter materials have been pre-positioned for release in 10 counties named as highest priority: Tana River, Garissa, Kisumu, Busia, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kilifi, Wajir, Mandera and Turkana.
The article says counties, led by governors and county commissioners, will manage local preparedness and response with national backing, while humanitarian partners and refugee operations in Dadaab, Kakuma and Kalobeyei will continue through existing coordination systems. In general, such preparations aim to reduce loss of life, protect livelihoods and limit public health disruptions when heavy rains begin.
