Kenya: Gachagua Backs Sifuna's New Party, Urges Push to Challenge Ruto Allies

What the report says
Former Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s newly launched political party, The Equitable Party (TEP), and urged him to move quickly to build the organization before the 2027 General Election. The remarks, reported by Capital FM and distributed by AllAfrica, were made after TEP’s unveiling in Nairobi on Sunday, where Sifuna was presented as the party’s leader and preferred presidential candidate.
Gachagua said the new party should recruit strong candidates, especially in areas where Sifuna already has support, and use the platform to strengthen the opposition’s challenge to President William Ruto and his allies. He also framed the development as part of a broader opposition effort to secure parliamentary strength and shape the next administration. Gachagua heads the Democracy for the Citizens Party and has previously said he was open to working with Sifuna in a future alliance.
The launch drew several opposition figures, including governors, lawmakers and senators, signaling wider interest in the emerging realignment. TEP has adopted the slogan “Tusawazishe” and says it will focus on equality, accountability and citizen-centered leadership. Separately, the article noted that the name Linda Mwananchi Movement has been reserved with the political parties registrar, though that step is not full party registration. Sifuna has indicated the movement may be rebranded under that name, giving him an organizational base as talks continue over a possible united opposition ticket for 2027.
