Kenya: Five People Killed in a Midnight Crash At Kikopey

What the report says
Five people were killed and one person survived with serious injuries after a road crash on Sunday night at the Kikopey area in Gilgil, Nakuru County, along Kenya’s Nakuru-Naivasha highway, according to Capital FM as distributed by AllAfrica. The collision involved a saloon car carrying six occupants and a passenger bus, and police said the crash happened near midnight on a stretch of road that is heavily used by traffic moving between Nakuru and Naivasha.
Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winstone Mwakio said the occupants of the smaller vehicle were returning from Seme in Kisumu County, where they had attended a family burial. Police described the impact as a head-on collision after the car appears to have drifted out of its lane and ended up beneath the bus. The bodies of those who died were taken to PNN Funeral Home, while the surviving passenger was rushed to hospital in Nakuru for treatment.
The crash highlights continuing concerns about road safety on major Kenyan highways, where collisions involving buses and smaller vehicles can be especially deadly. While the exact cause will depend on further police investigation, the report indicates that lane discipline and the steep section of road may have been factors in the fatal impact.
