Kenya: Eastleigh Collapse - Kalonzo Urges Probe Into Building Safety Failures

What the report says
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has called for a full inquiry into the collapse of an incomplete multi-storey building in Eastleigh, Nairobi, according to Capital FM, distributed by AllAfrica. In a statement reported on 23 October 2026, he said those responsible for any construction, approval or inspection failures should be identified and held accountable, regardless of their status or connections.
The incident has revived concerns about building safety in Kenya’s capital, especially questions about how a large structure was permitted to rise in a crowded neighbourhood and then give way. Kalonzo urged authorities to examine the approval process, site inspections and enforcement of regulations, arguing that the public deserves clear answers about what went wrong. He also warned against corruption and weak oversight undermining public safety.
The report said rescue teams were still searching for people believed trapped under the debris. Kalonzo praised the Kenya Red Cross, the Kenya Defence Forces Disaster Response Battalion, the National Disaster Management Unit, Nairobi County emergency teams and members of the public for supporting the response. He asked agencies to coordinate closely and quickly, saying the priority was to reach survivors and support the injured.
More broadly, the collapse has intensified scrutiny of construction standards and regulatory enforcement in Nairobi. As reported by Capital FM, the case has prompted renewed demands for stronger accountability for developers, inspectors and officials involved in building oversight.
