Kenya: DCI Busts Sh3.3mn Cannabis Haul After Dramatic Highway Chase

Capital FM, in a report distributed by AllAfrica, says Kenyan detectives arrested two suspected drug traffickers after a chase on the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway. The report, dated July 27, 2026, identified the suspects as Emmanuel Wesonga and Stephen Daria and said officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ Anti-Narcotics Unit detained them after a vehicle search allegedly uncovered cannabis valued at about Sh3.3 million.

According to the DCI account cited by Capital FM, detectives were acting on intelligence when they tried to stop a blue Nissan Note at KFA Roundabout. The driver allegedly failed to stop, turned sharply and drove toward the Eveready area. The vehicle reportedly continued moving even after a front tyre was punctured, before the occupants left it and attempted to escape on foot.

The report says officers caught the two men and recovered five sacks containing 110 kilograms of cannabis sativa from the vehicle. The suspects were said to be in police custody awaiting processing and arraignment, while the seized cannabis was retained as evidence.

Capital FM placed the incident within a wider anti-narcotics push in Kenya, noting that authorities had recently reported a separate Sh13.4 million cannabis seizure in operations across Nandi, Kiambu and Kisii counties. The outlet also cited a broader government strategy announced by President William Ruto involving expansion of the Anti-Narcotics Unit, more intelligence-led investigations and action against trafficking networks and their assets.
