Kenya confirms first imported Ebola case

What the report says
Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease, according to The Observer, after a Kenyan national who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo died in Nairobi. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the patient had spent seven years in the DRC and became ill about a month before travelling to Kenya.
The report says the man traveled by road from the DRC to Kampala and then flew to Nairobi, arriving on Saturday. He was taken from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to a Nairobi hospital by a relative and was isolated after showing symptoms consistent with viral hemorrhagic fever, including fever, weakness, sore throat and bleeding under the skin. Tests by national laboratories later confirmed Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease, and he died on Monday while receiving treatment.
The Ministry of Health said burial arrangements were being prepared and that contact tracing was underway. Officials had identified 28 contacts, including family members and health workers, and were also tracing 23 passengers and crew members from the same flight. The ministry urged the public to stay calm, follow hygiene advice and seek care at recognized health facilities. In general public-health terms, imported Ebola cases can prompt rapid tracing and quarantine to reduce any chance of local spread.
