Kenya confirms first Ebola case after patient from DR Congo dies in Nairobi

What the report says
Kenya has confirmed its first Ebola case after a Kenyan national who had recently returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo died in Nairobi, according to Al Jazeera’s report citing Kenya’s health authorities. The patient had lived in the DRC for seven years and was said to have been ill for about a month before traveling by road through Uganda and then flying to Kenya.
Health Secretary Aden Duale told reporters that contact tracing was underway. Authorities identified 28 close contacts, including family members and health workers, and were also tracing 23 other passengers on the same flight from Uganda. Kenya’s health ministry said those contacts would remain in isolation for 21 days and be released if they tested negative.
The case comes against the backdrop of a severe Ebola outbreak in the DRC, which Al Jazeera reported has spread across several provinces and is the country’s 17th outbreak. The article cited government figures showing more than 4,000 deaths and about 8,300 confirmed cases. The World Health Organization has warned the epidemic is not yet under control. Uganda, which the patient passed through, had reported Ebola cases earlier in the year but was declared Ebola-free in August.
The development matters because it raises the risk of cross-border spread in a region with active travel links and ongoing public health surveillance needs.
