Kenya: AWS to Spend $1bn Putting Ai Engineers Inside Customer Teams

Amazon Web Services has announced a $1 billion investment in a new Forward Deployed Engineering team that will place AI specialists inside customer organisations, according to Capital FM’s Nairobi report distributed by AllAfrica. The move is aimed at helping companies shift from testing artificial intelligence to using it in day-to-day operations.

AWS said the team will work directly with customers to build and deploy “agentic” AI systems that can perform tasks with limited human oversight. The company said engineers will collaborate with business, engineering and security teams, and that the goal is to reduce deployment timelines from months to days while also leaving customers with the skills to manage the systems themselves.

The report said AWS is positioning the effort as different from traditional consulting because it focuses on outcomes and working software rather than billable hours. It also said the systems will be designed around customer data, governance rules and existing workflows, with security measures such as hardware-based isolation and encryption. Customer data is expected to stay within the customer’s governance framework.

AWS said the new initiative builds on its earlier AI work and will be especially relevant for regulated industries, financial services and government agencies. The company already counts organizations such as the NFL, the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, Ricoh and Southwest Airlines among those it has worked with on AI projects.
