Kenmore Air seaplane crashes near Sucia Island; all 11 aboard rescued - KOMO

What the report says
KOMO News reported that a Kenmore Air seaplane crashed into the water near Sucia Island in San Juan County, Washington, on Thursday evening, July 23, 2026, prompting a multi-agency rescue response. The airline identified the aircraft as a de Havilland DHC-3 Otter operating as Flight 140, which left Seattle’s Lake Union at about 4:30 p.m. for Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. Kenmore Air said the accident occurred in Shallow Bay near Sucia Island around 5:15 p.m.
According to KOMO, the plane was carrying 10 passengers and one pilot. Orcas Island Fire & Rescue later said all 11 people had been rescued, and Kenmore Air said everyone had been accounted for. The airline reported that two injured passengers were taken to a hospital in Bellingham, two others were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, and seven people were brought to a U.S. Coast Guard base for additional evaluation. San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter said one of the four injured passengers was in critical condition during transport.
The response included the U.S. Coast Guard, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, Orcas Island Fire & Rescue, San Juan Island Fire & Rescue, Lopez Island Fire & Rescue and San Juan County Parks. KOMO reported that Peter credited the rapid mobilization of agencies and nearby civilians in an island environment where emergency crews often must reach scenes by boat or air.
Kenmore Air said it activated emergency procedures, was cooperating with investigators and would not speculate on the cause. KOMO reported that the cause remained under investigation and that Kenmore Air canceled scheduled flights Friday to focus on passengers, the pilot, families, employees and response efforts.
