Keiko Fujimori sworn in as Peru president after narrow election win

The 51-year-old conservative won by fewer than 50,000 votes after three earlier failed bids for the presidency, taking office in a country marked by repeated leadership changes and deep political mistrust.

Fujimori campaigned heavily on public security, pledging a tough response to what Al Jazeera described as Peru’s worst crime crisis in decades, including extortion and contract killings linked to local and foreign gangs.
