KCCA to retain weekly Weyonje Campaign alongside National Cleaning Day

The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reported that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) will keep its weekly Weyonje clean-up campaign even as Uganda rolls out a National Cleaning Day. The clarification was made during the launch of the national initiative in Kisenyi, Kampala, on Saturday, with KCCA officials saying the two programmes are intended to work together rather than duplicate each other.

According to the report, KCCA Public Health Director Dr. Sarah Zalwango said the national exercise would help communities tackle places not consistently reached through Weyonje, which is held every Saturday. She also linked Kampala’s sanitation burden to waste coming in from surrounding metropolitan areas, saying a countrywide clean-up effort could reduce the amount of garbage ending up in the capital.

KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki welcomed increased government funding for the authority, saying it would support Weyonje and improve garbage collection. The funds are expected to help rehabilitate the Buyala dumpsite, which receives waste from Kampala and the wider metropolitan area, and to procure more garbage trucks. Buzeki also said KCCA has introduced “Ambiance Ambassadors” to monitor public spaces and discourage littering.

The report noted that the launch itself produced large amounts of waste, with heaps still visible in parts of Kampala, including Kawempe and Kagoma in Nabweru Division, by the afternoon. KCCA spokesperson Daniel Nuwabine said the volume showed how much garbage had accumulated in communities, and that KCCA and private waste collectors would work to clear it. The issue matters because waste management remains central to public health and urban service delivery in Kampala.
