What the report says

Kampala Capital City Authority has intensified its weekly Weyonje sanitation campaign in Lugaju, Rubaga Division, as residents and local leaders push for more garbage trucks and more frequent waste evacuation. According to Nile Post, the latest clean-up took place on Saturday in the Mugema and Kasubi 3 zones and involved KCCA officials, local leaders and community members carrying out garbage collection, sanitation work and public sensitisation.

KCCA officials used the exercise to encourage residents to take greater responsibility for waste management, including sorting rubbish at the point of generation and handing it over to authorised collectors. Dr Sarah Zalwango, KCCA’s acting director of public health services and environment, said separating waste can make collection easier and can also support recycling and possible household income generation. She also urged people not to dump waste in undesignated places and praised local leaders for supporting the campaign.

Residents welcomed the clean-up drive but said Lugaju’s growing population and waste volume require more trucks and more regular collection. Their comments reflect broader concerns about Kampala’s waste management capacity. As general background, the city has long faced pressure from rapid urban growth, limited collection coverage and disposal challenges, which is why authorities often stress shared responsibility between government and communities.

KCCA says the Weyonje drive works alongside the government’s monthly National Cleaning Day efforts. The Lugaju response suggests that while community mobilisation remains important, residents want stronger collection services to match the amount of waste being produced.
