KCCA Pushes for Breastfeeding Facilities Across Kampala Workplaces

Kampala Capital City Authority is calling for breastfeeding rooms to be expanded beyond its headquarters and into division offices, markets and other workplaces across the city. The appeal followed the launch of a dedicated breastfeeding room at KCCA’s City Hall, which the authority says is meant to give nursing mothers a private, hygienic place to breastfeed or express milk during working hours.

According to Nile Post, KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said the City Hall facility should be treated as a model for wider rollout, especially because many working mothers are employed away from headquarters. She said the initiative is intended to help women continue breastfeeding while meeting workplace duties, and described it as part of a people-centred approach. The room was established with support from UNICEF and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).

KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi said supporting nursing mothers can also improve workplace performance, while KCCA’s public health director, Dr Sarah Zalwango, noted that some KCCA-managed sites already have similar facilities, including Busega and Wandegeya markets. The Ministry of Health welcomed the move, and GAIN said it is working with institutions and companies to create breastfeeding corners for working mothers.

The initiative comes during Breastfeeding Month and reflects a broader public health push to make workplaces more supportive of mothers returning to work. In general, breastfeeding-friendly spaces are seen as one way employers can reduce barriers for nursing mothers, though the availability of such facilities remains limited in many settings.
