KCCA Opens Breastfeeding Room at City Hall to Support Working Mothers

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has opened a dedicated breastfeeding room at City Hall for nursing mothers working at the authority. According to Nile Post, the space is designed to give women a private, hygienic place to breastfeed or express milk during the workday, helping them manage job responsibilities alongside childcare.

The launch took place as Uganda marks Breastfeeding Month in August, giving the initiative added public-health visibility. KCCA said the room is meant to reduce some of the practical barriers faced by working mothers after returning from childbirth. Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki described the move as part of a people-centred approach and said support for employees’ families can help create a more productive workforce.

The facility was established with support from the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN). KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi and Public Health and Environment Director Dr Sarah Zalwango said breastfeeding-friendly workplaces can improve confidence and comfort for mothers, and noted that similar arrangements already exist in some KCCA-managed sites, including Busega and Wandegeya markets.

KCCA said it wants the model expanded to more offices and markets where many women work. The ministry and development partners welcomed the initiative, which reflects a broader public-health effort to encourage breastfeeding while also recognising the realities of employment for mothers.
