What the report says

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has stepped up talks with city trader groups over trade order, market space, waste handling and public safety, according to Nile Post. The engagement, held at Kitante Primary School, followed concerns raised in an earlier stakeholder meeting convened by the State House Investors Protection Unit.

KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said traders selling on streets and other unauthorised areas should move into public markets, noting that the authority says more than 550 stalls are currently vacant. The article said available space exists in markets including Wandegeya, Usafi and Luzira. Buzeki also indicated that traders who cannot find suitable space will be considered in future arrangements as new markets are developed.

Other city and trader representatives used the meeting to discuss related issues. Lord Mayor Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo called for unity, lawfulness and continued dialogue, while trader leaders welcomed recent improvements in roads, public health work and drainage. One trader representative suggested Sunday markets to create more trading opportunities for vendors outside formal spaces.

KCCA officials also emphasised that cleanliness and order are shared responsibilities. Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi and public health officials reminded businesses to manage waste properly, while engineering staff warned against placing goods in doorways and walkways because it can block movement and create safety risks. The meeting included associations such as NETA, FUTA, UNATA, KACITA, KATA, UATEA and KAAFO, reflecting broader consultations on Kampala’s trading environment.
