KCCA Closes Ben Kiwanuka Street for Three Weeks

What the report says
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has closed Ben Kiwanuka Street in the city’s central business district for three weeks to allow major carriageway and drainage works. According to Nile Post, the closure began on Tuesday, August 18, and is scheduled to continue until September 5, as the authority works to speed up construction before seasonal rains can interfere.
The road is one of downtown Kampala’s busiest commercial corridors, linking the Entebbe Road and Clock Tower area with Kyaggwe Road and several other streets in the CBD. KCCA said the project will involve heavy excavation, rockfill and drainage line construction, making a full closure necessary to complete the works more quickly and safely.
The disruption is expected to affect motorists, pedestrians and businesses operating along the route. KCCA said it will install warning signs, provide detours and deploy traffic police to help manage movement during the closure. Drivers have been advised to plan ahead and use alternative routes such as Sebaana Road, Sikh Road, Buxton Street, Burton Street, Market Street, Kiyembe Lane, Ssewanyana Bin Amir Road, Namirembe Road, Entebbe Road, Nsambya Road and Mukwano Road.
The closure forms part of broader efforts to improve Kampala’s road network and reduce future congestion in the city centre.
