KCCA Adds 10 Garbage Trucks as Kampala Prepares for National Cleaning Day

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has expanded its waste collection fleet by adding 10 garbage trucks as the city readies for monthly National Cleaning Day exercises, according to Nile Post. The new vehicles raise the total number of trucks serving Kampala to 116 and are intended to help manage the city’s growing waste burden and reduce illegal dumping.

Nile Post reports that Kampala produces an estimated 2,000 to 2,500 tonnes of rubbish each day, creating pressure on collection and disposal systems. To improve coverage, KCCA has also contracted nine private waste management companies, each assigned to one of the city’s nine constituencies. The National Cleaning Day will take place on the last Saturday of every month under a government directive focused on cleaner public spaces and better waste handling.

KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said the exercise will follow a “bring-to-truck” approach, with residents expected to sort organic and inorganic waste and take it to designated collection points. The authority said local leaders will help identify those points, while inspection checks will be used to monitor households and discourage improper disposal.

The report also notes that only KCCA-licensed vehicles will be allowed to collect garbage, including restrictions on bicycles, boda bodas and other unlicensed transport. In a broader sense, the move reflects the challenge many fast-growing cities face in keeping pace with rising urban waste between scheduled clean-up campaigns.
