Kazo residents ask Nansana Municipality to collect garbage after national clean-up

Nile Post reports that residents of Kazo Muganzirwaza Village in Nansana Municipality welcomed the government-led Bulungi Bwansi sanitation campaign but called on municipal authorities to remove the waste collected during the exercise. The clean-up took place on Saturday in Kazo, where residents cleared roads, drainage channels and public spaces, leaving heaps of garbage along several roadsides awaiting collection.

According to the report, village chairperson Ismael Kigozi praised residents for taking part and said the activity had improved areas that had previously been littered. He urged Nansana Municipality to collect the accumulated rubbish quickly, warning that if it decomposes it could expose the community to disease. Kigozi also argued that residents should not be charged for removing garbage gathered during the official exercise, since they already pay for household waste collection.

Resident Hussein Matovu also supported the campaign, saying it could help build a stronger culture of cleanliness even though participation was mandatory. Nile Post reported that some residents criticised neighbours who did not join voluntarily, saying local leaders had to move from home to home to encourage or compel participation.

The issue matters because community clean-ups can reduce visible waste and blocked drainage, but they depend on timely disposal by local authorities to avoid creating new public health risks. The residents urged the government to keep the nationwide sanitation effort active, enforce penalties for those who refuse to clean their surroundings, and pair public participation with reliable garbage collection.
