Kayunga Woman MP Promotes Women’s Financial Independence Through Skills Training

What the report says
Kayunga District Woman MP Harriet Nakwedde is backing a set of programmes aimed at helping women and young people build more secure livelihoods through skills training, small business support and financial education, according to Nile Post. The initiative is focused on creating paths to economic independence for people who have ideas for businesses but lack capital, practical experience or basic supplies to begin.
The reported intervention combines vocational training with start-up assistance for small-scale entrepreneurs. Beneficiaries in businesses such as food vending have received items including sugar, cooking oil, rice and aprons to help them either launch or strengthen their enterprises. Nakwedde is also encouraging women, vendors and other small business owners to better manage income, save part of their earnings and reinvest in growth rather than using all proceeds for daily spending.
Nile Post also reports that the programme is urging girls and women to pursue technical and vocational courses in areas such as welding, electrical installation, mechanics and plumbing. The message is meant to challenge traditional assumptions about which careers are suitable for women and to expand opportunities in trades that can lead to jobs or self-employment.
More broadly, the effort reflects a wider push in Uganda to pair entrepreneurship support with skills development, especially for people facing limited formal employment options. Its practical impact will depend on whether participants can apply the training, manage businesses effectively and access continued support as they grow.
