Kayunga teachers push for better pay and improved working conditions

What the report says
Teachers in Kayunga District, Uganda, used World Teachers’ Day to renew calls for better pay, improved working conditions and stronger professional recognition, according to Nile Post. The report says educators in the district cited problems including understaffing, limited funding, unequal pay and few chances for career progression, arguing that these pressures are affecting the quality of teaching in schools.
Speaking in Kayunga Town, Andrew Kwete of the Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULITU) and chairperson of the ULITU SACCO said the day should highlight the role teachers play in communities and in national development. He and other teachers urged government and education authorities to improve remuneration, address staffing gaps and review policies that affect teacher welfare.
The teachers said better support would help them do their jobs more effectively and would contribute to more consistent learning outcomes for pupils. They also called on communities and the state to treat teachers as key partners in development and to provide the resources needed for a more supportive working environment.
World Teachers’ Day is marked globally each year on October 5. Nile Post noted that the 2026 observance is linked to the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, a framework often cited in discussions about teacher rights and professional standards.
