Kayunga PLU Leaders Clash

What the report says
A leadership dispute inside the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in Kayunga District has widened into a broader political row, according to Nile Post. Rival camps are disagreeing over who should coordinate PLU activities locally and how strongly the group should mobilise support for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who leads the movement associated with the First Son.
The report says Jimmy Lwanga, the PLU coordinator for Greater Mukono, and Augustine Tumwine have been among those pushing for stronger backing for Gen. Muhoozi, including after a mobilisation event in Kayunga Town Council. The article also says Lwanga was appointed to his role by Gen. Muhoozi in October 2024 and has been advocating for wider grassroots support ahead of the 2031 political cycle. The dispute has reportedly drawn in some National Resistance Movement (NRM) officials.
Jamaada Kivumbi, the NRM returning officer for Kayunga District, rejected pressure to take sides in the PLU contest. He said his duty is to the ruling NRM and argued that the PLU and NRM should not be treated as the same organisation. He also criticised attacks on senior government officials, including Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo, saying political disagreements should be handled with discipline.
The disagreement highlights the tension between PLU’s identity as a pressure group and its growing role in local political mobilisation. It also raises questions about leadership structures in Kayunga and how PLU’s activities will relate to the NRM and other state-linked officials going forward.
