What the report says

The Nile Post reports that farmers in Kayunga District are being encouraged to adopt solar irrigation and regenerative agriculture as part of the Power for Food Project, led by the Advocacy Coalition for Sustainable Agriculture (ACSA). The programme is aimed at helping growers cope with prolonged dry spells, cut post-harvest losses and improve access to markets.

According to the report, the message was delivered during a two-day workshop in Kyampisi, Kayunga Sub-county, where programme manager Florence Nassuuna said weather shocks and weak links between farmers, buyers and other actors in the value chain were affecting production. She said the project wants to connect farmers with service providers, local authorities and development partners so they can keep producing even during the off-season.

The project is promoting several technologies, including solar-powered irrigation for dry periods, solar drying equipment to preserve harvests, and solar cooling systems for perishable produce. Nassuuna also pointed to biogas as another option for household energy use. She said training, demonstrations and farmer-to-farmer learning would be central to the programme, with the aim of helping farmers identify the support they need and access subsidised technologies.

Participants at the workshop welcomed the initiative and said sustainable farming and renewable energy could improve crop quality and household incomes. More broadly, the effort reflects a wider push in Uganda to pair climate-resilient farming with cleaner energy solutions in areas facing increasingly unpredictable weather.
