Katikkiro Mayiga Urges Schools to Prioritise Quality Education

What the report says
Buganda’s Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, used the opening of BackBay Primary School in Kira-Kitukutwe to call on nursery and primary schools to focus on quality education, qualified teachers and safe facilities. According to Nile Post, he said early schooling is where children build the foundation for becoming responsible and productive citizens, and argued that schools must be properly equipped to support that goal.
Mayiga made the remarks on Saturday after arriving at the school at about 11am. He was received by the Katikkiro of Busoga, Dr Joseph Muvawala, and other guests, then toured classrooms and the school’s facilities before officially opening the institution. The event also included a Holy Mass led by Rev. Fr Jude Makanga, who encouraged parents not to withhold education from children on the mistaken belief that schooling can spoil them.
The Buganda leader also linked education to national development, saying government should help create conditions that allow children from low-income families to access school. He urged school proprietors to ensure buildings meet required standards and to employ competent teachers who can give learners a strong start.
The school’s operations manager, Margaret Mukobe, said the institution intends to provide quality education and nurture pupils into well-rounded learners. Buganda Kingdom’s education minister, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, attended the function with other officials. More broadly, the remarks reflect ongoing concerns in Uganda and elsewhere about school quality, teacher preparedness and safe learning environments, especially in early childhood education.
