Katikkiro Mayiga Calls for Stronger Spirit of Brotherhood and Care

Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has used a personal visit in Mutundwe to encourage Ugandans to revive the traditional spirit of brotherhood, mutual care and neighbourly support. According to Nile Post, he made the remarks while visiting Henry Kibirige and his wife, Jane Kibirige, to express sympathy over Kibirige’s illness.

Mayiga said the visit was also a gesture of gratitude to a man he described as an important source of guidance in his younger years, when he had just begun serving the Kabaka. The article says Kibirige is the son of the late Bendicto Kibirige, who served as a senior commander in the army of the late Kabaka Muteesa II. Mayiga recalled that Kibirige shared accounts of the Kabaka’s era and helped him understand how to carry out his duties.

The Katikkiro said he was moved to visit after learning that Kibirige’s eyesight had deteriorated significantly. He thanked Kibirige’s children and neighbours for caring for him and maintaining his hygiene, presenting the visit as an example of the kind of social solidarity he wants people to preserve.

Mayiga warned that communities can be weakened when people adopt lifestyles that reduce communication and closeness. He urged Ugandans not to copy habits that could erode family and community ties, arguing that older traditions placed greater value on helping one another when difficulties arose.
