Kassanda school canteen attendant arrested over stoning S.3 student to death

What the report says
Police in Kassanda district have arrested a school canteen attendant, Resty Namutebi, in connection with the death of a senior three student at Bright Way Secondary School in Kyamasansa village, Kassanda sub-county. According to the police account reported by The Observer, Namutebi is accused of throwing a stone during a confrontation at the school, an act that allegedly led to the fatal injury of 20-year-old Ronald Ssemiyingo.
The incident was said to have taken place on Monday, October 5, while the report reached Kassanda police station on Wednesday, October 7, after which investigators moved in and detained the suspect. Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi said the stone was reportedly aimed at another student but missed and struck Ssemiyingo instead, causing serious head injuries.
Ssemiyingo was first given aid at the school and then taken to Red Rose Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, police said. Officers have opened a murder inquiry and are working to establish how the confrontation began and how it escalated. The case adds to wider concern in Uganda about violence on or around school premises, although the broader pattern should be read as general context rather than part of the specific allegation in this case.
