Kasese Leaders Seek Clarity on International Airport Plans

What the report says
Residents and local leaders in Kasese District are asking for clearer answers on plans to upgrade Kasese airfield, nearly two decades after President Museveni pledged to turn it into an international airport. According to Nile Post, the latest concern is not just whether work will proceed, but what the project is meant to deliver and whether international-airport status is still the end goal.
Deputy town clerk Zedekiah Kayiri said local officials recently met Uganda Civil Aviation Authority representatives in Mbarara and were told the immediate focus was to improve the airfield so it can handle larger aircraft. He also noted that any development around the site must meet aviation safety standards. Kasese Municipality Mayor Chance Kahindo said residents have waited for years and want government to state plainly whether they are getting an international airport or a more limited upgrade.
District chairperson Eriphazi Muhindi said Kasese’s tourism potential, along with hopes tied to the revival of Kilembe Mines, strengthens the case for a better aviation facility that could support passenger and cargo traffic. The airfield currently serves charter and private flights, including tourist travel to the Rwenzori region. Nile Post also said earlier UCAA plans had discussed a runway expansion and new terminal and support facilities, but the latest discussions do not confirm funding, timing or final scope.
