What the report says

Residents of Kanara Sub-county in Kitagwenda District are welcoming the opening of Kanara Seed Secondary School, a government-funded project that they say will reduce the long distances many learners have been travelling to reach secondary education. According to Nile Post, the school was commissioned on Friday and is expected to ease pressure on families who previously had to send children to schools in neighbouring areas.

The project cost Shs2.6 billion and was launched in 2023 under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers Programme. While it was originally planned to be completed in 18 months, implementation delays pushed back its opening. The commissioning was led by Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi, who was joined by area MPs and other government officials.

Kafuuzi urged parents to prioritise schooling, while district education officials said the school addresses part of a wider access gap. Kitagwenda District Education Officer Sedas Asiimwe said about six sub-counties in the district still do not have government secondary schools, meaning many learners continue to face long journeys. He and local leaders called for more seed schools in underserved areas so access to education does not depend on where a child lives.

The new school is expected to improve attendance, reduce costs for parents and strengthen opportunities for learners in the area. More broadly, the development reflects ongoing efforts in Uganda to expand public secondary education in rural communities, though Nile Post notes that additional investment is still needed across the district.
