What the report says

NRM candidate Daniel Kananura has asked the High Court in Wakiso to withdraw his election petition challenging George Musisi’s victory in the Kira Municipality parliamentary race, according to Nile Post. The request was made after both sides had already presented evidence, meaning the dispute had moved close to final submissions before judgment.

Musisi, who won the seat on the National Unity Platform ticket, opposed the move and told the court that Kananura should pay the expenses incurred in defending the case. The incumbent legislator’s lawyers also argued that the petition should not simply be abandoned without addressing legal costs. The exchange reportedly came during a hearing at the High Court in Nabweru before Justice George Okello.

Nile Post reported that Kananura said he had been misled by lawyers and no longer wanted to continue with the case. His original petition had alleged irregularities in the 2026 election, including claims involving the Electoral Commission and differences in results figures. Musisi denied the allegations and defended his win, which the report says was 21,571 votes to Kananura’s 6,927.

The court must now decide whether to allow the withdrawal and whether Kananura should meet some or all of the legal costs. The case is one of several election disputes being handled by the courts in Uganda, where petition withdrawals and cost orders can become important as candidates reassess their legal strategies after evidence has been heard.
